Baby Beautycounter \\ Sweet Laurel

Beautycounter is my go-to for all things safe beauty. I don’t wear a ton of make up, but when I do, everything I wear is from Beautycounter.  I am happy to say Beautycounter is a company we’ve worked with regularly at Sweet Laurel. They have partnered with us at events, hosted workshops with us and shared our recipes!

I trust their products, and can confidently wear them without worrying about toxic chemicals seeping through my pores. Recently, I’ve re-thought everything I put on my face and body because I’ve been pregnant and breastfeeding for the past year. Make up and beauty products tend to have ingredients that are highly toxic, and unfortunately the United States does not monitor what companies put into their products. For example, the European Union has banned 1,400 chemicals from use in beauty products. That means beauty and make up products are far safer in Europe then in America! Fortunately, Beautycounter has come to the scene here in the states. Their goal is to create beauty products that are safe to use, sans chemicals, with high quality, long lasting appeal. As you can see, I love Beautycounter and what they stand for.

I was overjoyed last year when I discovered Beautycounter launched a baby line! I got my hands on a couple of their products, and have already used them on Nico! Nico has sensitive skin, so I’m super careful with what I use for soap, lotion, etc. Fortunately, the products have worked great for Nico, and we both love using them!

I highly recommend the diaper rash cream and gentle all over wash. They also have this roomy diaper bag! I don’t know about you, but for me, I always need more room in my diaper bag. This one sure does the trick!

Something else I love about Beautycounter is how spot on their packaging is. Always simple, chic and beautiful. They nailed it! I hope you are able to get your hands on Beautycounter soon! I know you (and your baby) will be glad you did. xo, Laurel

SNOO \\ Sweet Laurel

The number one piece of advice people offered me when I was pregnant was to, ‘Enjoy sleep while you still have it!’ Now, this is a very good piece of advice, but one thing I have that they likely did not have is the SNOO, by Happiest Baby. The SNOO was recently invented by Dr. Harvey Karp, the author of bestseller Happiest Baby on the Block. This was one of the first books I read during my pregnancy with Nico, and it provided an excellent backbone to infant care and educated me on Karp’s ever popular 5 S’s. The 5 S’s are the essential tools for parents to use to calm their babies. The 5 S’s are Swaddle, Side or Stomach position, Shushing, Swing and Suck. I’ve found the 5 S’s work wonders for Nico. Nick especially loves to use all 5 S’s to calm Nico.

While these tools work very well during the day, at night, the SNOO is our best friend. The SNOO is the world’s first smart sleep that boosts baby’s sleep by imitating the rhythmic sensations they feel in the womb. It is truly an amazing invention! The goal of the SNOO is to solve the number one complaint of new parents: lack of sleep. The SNOO works to soothe a fussy baby by using a good swaddle, rocking motion and white noise. It is engineered to increase rocking and noise as the baby’s cry increases. Our baby is not super fussy, but we quickly noticed the benefits of the SNOO with Nico. At night, after I’ve fed Nico, burped him and changed his diaper, I put him in the SNOO sack (the swaddle built into the SNOO). I turn it on and it starts to play white noise and rock. Nico loves the movement and it helps him go to sleep faster.  I want Nico to get all the sleep he can get because that is when infants do most of their growing. If Nico falls asleep, then wakes within the hour before he needs to feed again, he will naturally fuss a bit. If this happens, the SNOO reactivates and starts to rock him again and increases the white noise. The white noise, rocking and swaddle mimic the way he felt in the womb creates a calm and sleepy baby Nico.

The SNOO is also safe! It comes with a built-in swaddle that doesn’t allow the baby to turn from his back onto his stomach, a fear many parents have with a traditional swaddle. Because the SNOO is only used until the baby is 6 months old or can roll over, the swaddle is built for babies to sleep on their backs only. We use the SNOO as a co-sleeper, and it is stationed right next to our bed. While I’d love for Nico to sleep on my chest all night (I frequently let him nap here, never overnight, however), I prefer to have him sleep in a crib, like the SNOO, while I am sleeping. When he is in there, I can rest peacefully knowing he is swaddled up and in his own bed, whereas something could happen to him on my bed.

While I still do get up 3-4 times a night to feed him, my sleep is maximized because I do not spend much time soothing him before he gets to sleep or worrying whether he is comforted or not. I know the rocking, white noise and swaddle make him feel secure, so I am a happy camper, who can get back to sleep!  Thanks to the SNOO, I am not suffering from sleep deprivation. I usually arise rested, and if I need a nap during the day, Nico goes into the SNOO and I go on my bed while he naps! Check out this video all about SNOO, or read more on their site.

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, and even more beautiful is the effect it has on one’s level of self-care. Before I was pregnant, self-care did not mean too much to me. Besides eating well, basic hygiene, yoga and the occasional infrared sauna treatments, I never really went out of my way to treat my body kindly. When I became pregnant in May, everything changed, and for the better! Suddenly I became focused on the care of another human life, through my body. After all, the health and wellness of my baby depends on me.

And so the changes began. I scoured the ingredients on everything I put on my body, and stopped using some of my lotions and scented soaps! I sorted through cleaning product in my home and made sure I only used non-toxic and environmentally safe detergents and disinfectants. I even bought organic sheets for my bed! Think I went too far there?

Here are some of my all-time favorite, pregnancy safe, beauty products. Each one is sourced from companies that CARE about what is in their products and the impact the products have on people and our planet. I hope you enjoy this collection and get to check these amazing products soon! xo, Laurel

I love Los Angeles native and beauty queen, Shiva Rose. We share a deep love for Santa Monica Canyon and a special bond since working together on recipes in her kitchen last year. She has an amazing product line centered around simple and organic ingredients, and my favorite flower: the rose. This rose water is my go-to scent and my favorite perfume. It is also pregnancy safe, as some scents and essential oils are harmful to use during pregnancy.  Check out her beauty products here!

This one is more for my hubby, who I’ve been nagging to start using safe deodorant for a while now. I was so concerned when I found out most deodorants were filled with aluminum, and I didn’t want him rubbing it on his skin (the largest organ of the body) every morning! Agent Nateur came to the rescue thankfully! And the best part is, this product is safe AND effective!

Nail polish is something I don’t wear much, but when I do, I make sure it is free of harmful ingredients. This is a tradition I started before I became pregnant, and now that all my polishes are safe, I’m loving my collection! Enter RGB. Their color range is extraordinary, and standards high. This color is RGB 10, and my all time fave shade to wear on my nails.

What I love about their offerings is that they actually perform, and last all day long! I use this sweet smelling moisturizer before bed each night. It is like my night cap ;).
